Technical SEO Audit Guide for Small-Business Websites
A technical SEO audit should explain whether search engines and customers can reliably reach, understand and use the important pages. The deliverable is not a giant export of warnings; it is a prioritized list tied to business impact.
Confirm the indexable page set
Compare the intended pages with the sitemap, internal links, canonical tags, robots directives and Search Console coverage. Remove accidental conflicts and keep duplicate or utility pages from competing with the pages meant to rank.
Check redirects and migration history
Find broken links, redirect chains, loops and valuable old URLs that no longer reach a relevant destination. During a redesign, map legacy URLs before launch. Redirects should preserve a useful customer and search path, not send everything to the homepage.
Evaluate internal links and page intent
Important pages should be reachable through crawlable links with descriptive anchor text. Connect guides to relevant services and services to supporting evidence. Internal links should help a visitor understand the next question, not merely repeat keywords.
Review performance, accessibility and mobile behavior
Inspect Core Web Vitals, image sizing, unnecessary scripts, layout shifts, keyboard access, contrast and touch targets. Google’s developer guidance recommends sites that are secure, fast, accessible and functional across devices.
Test structured data and conversion paths
Validate applicable structured data without inventing reviews or claims. Then test forms, phone links, booking, email actions and analytics. A technically crawlable page that fails the customer journey is not complete.
